Frequently Asked Questions about rTMS (Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation)

rTMS, or Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, is a non-invasive, FDA and TGA- approved treatment that uses magnetic fields to help with depression and anxiety, by stimulating nerve cells in the brain.
People with depression and anxiety that may have underactive neural pathways, when undergoing rTMS - will receive the repetitive magnetic pulses to specific areas of the brain involved in regulating mood to help relieve the symptoms.
For individuals who have not responded to traditional treatments such as medication and psychotherapy, rTMS is usually recommended. It can also be particularly beneficial for those with depression and anxiety that are treatment-resistant.
Yes, rTMS is considered safe and is approved by both the FDA and TGA. It is a non- invasive procedure with minimal side effects. The most common side effects are usually mild and include headache, scalp discomfort, and tingling sensations.
A typical rTMS session lasts about 30 to 40 minutes. Depending on their specific treatment plan, patients usually undergo treatment five times a week for four to six weeks.
During a rTMS session, you will sit in a comfortable chair while a technician places a magnetic coil against your scalp. The device then delivers magnetic pulses to your brain. You may hear clicking sounds and feel a tapping sensation on your scalp.
Most patients experience minimal side effects, which may include mild headache, scalp discomfort, or tingling at the treatment site. After the session ends, these side effects will typically subside quickly.
Yes, you can resume your daily activities immediately after each session. rTMS is a non- invasive treatment and there is no need for anaesthesia or sedation.
